Are gemstones treated before being set into jewelry?

There are several different treatments that many gemstones undergo before being set in your favorite piece of jewelry:

  • Diamonds
    • Fracture/Cavity Filling
    • Laser Drilling
    • HPHT/CVD
    • Irradiation
    • Etc.
  • Colored Gemstones
    • Fracture/Cavity Filling

While some of these treatments are permanent and will not be cause damage to your gemstone during repairs, many of them can lead to significant damage to the gemstone if we are not made aware of the treatment before performing a repair (i.e. color change, breakage, clarity enhancement damage).
